The Perfume Shop
Refreshing Britain’s leading perfume specialist to restore desire and distinction.
Background
The Perfume Shop was founded on a powerful balance: making perfume feel both aspirational and accessible. A place where people could discover the world’s best perfumes, guided by experts who knew, love and understood scent.
But over time, that balance had shifted. Value started to outweigh aspiration, and the brand had become increasingly associated promotion and range. Research showed strong awareness, trust and value perceptions, but also a need for greater emotional connection and clearer differentiation.
We were tasked to refresh the brand in a way that could restore desire, elevate expertise and give The Perfume Shop a more distinctive role in the category. Not by walking away from value, range or accessibility, but by building a richer brand world around it all.
How we got there
We started by looking beyond the bottle. While perfume is invisible, its effect can be instant. It changes how you feel, how you remember someone, and how a moment stays with you. It’s not just something you wear, it’s something that becomes part of you.
That truth is rooted in how we are wired. Smell is the only sense that goes straight to the limbic system, where memory and emotion live, speaking a language only the nose really knows.
This gave us permission to reposition perfume from simply a product into a force for confidence, individuality, attraction, comfort, memory and self-expression. And because those feelings are universal, The Perfume Shop could play a bigger role than retail alone: a modern public service to feel like the best version of you made possible by what lives inside every bottle.

Brand Platform
We developed a new brand platform, The Power of Perfume, built around the idea that perfume is the first move; setting the tone, changing the mood and helping people own the moment.
In a category where most retailers sell the same bottles, true differentiation had to come from owning the experience around scent, not simply the product on shelf. So we placed the potential of perfume right at the heart of the brand by championing Its ability to command attention, ignite confidence, stir imagination and express everything without needing a single word.
As the country’s largest specialist perfume retailer, The Perfume Shop naturally could own the bigger mission to ‘Perfume the nation’. To shape the nation’s relationship with scent through the power in every bottle and the passion of its people. Sparking collective transformation one daily spritz at a time.
We translated that ambition through the internal north star 'Feel Scentsational', designed to guide decisions across the business through one simple filter “does this help people feel good through scent?”
And we formed a messaging system with greater fragrance fluency: from top-note headlines that create instant attraction, to heart-note stories around mood, memory and identity, to base-note proof points rooted in expertise, value and range.
Brand Identity
The visual identity needed to evolve without losing recognition. The logo and core colours remained, but the wider brand world was sharpened to feel more distinctive and emotionally expressive.
Black, white and red became the foundation for a fuller system of gradients, reflections, evolved typography, handwriting, graphic devices, price mechanics and layout principles.
Every element was designed to help The Perfume Shop own more of the world that perfume creates. The red border and block introduced ownable brand codes, giving every touchpoint immediate recognition and a clear TPS frame. Gradients captured the imprint of a spritz - soft, atmospheric and sensorial, and reflections added a tactile, product-led texture to make the brand world feel more immersive.
The typographic system was evolved to create clearer hierarchy, greater confidence and consistency across brand, retail and digital applications.
Organic handwriting, used as a supplementary treatment, brought the system closer to the personal role perfume plays in people’s lives, echoing the memories and emotions that make it feel individual.

Art Direction
The visual world focused on real people and emotional moments. Black-and-white photography became a central part of the refreshed identity, creating a timeless and ownable aesthetic that separated The Perfume Shop from the colourful visual worlds of the individual brands it stocks, allowing them to feel like the curator and destination rather than simply the retailer around others.
Within that world, perfume became the unseen element bringing each moment to life, focusing on the interaction between scent, skin and presence. People portraits captured individuality and confidence, while shared group moments captured connection, memory and warmth.
Reflections, gradients, light, texture and framing devices then made the invisible visible: the trail scent leaves, the atmosphere it creates and the emotional shift it brings.

Roll Out
The brand refresh was built to work as a complete brand system, not just a new look. The final guidelines gave The Perfume Shop a practical toolkit across strategy, messaging, identity, tone of voice, photography, retail, digital, product and internal touch points.
Alongside this, we developed a photography and reflections bank, giving the brand a consistent set of assets to bring the new visual world to life across every channel.

The launch campaign
The first major expression was the national launch campaign for The Power of Perfume. Its role was to bring the new brand to life at scale, turning the strategy, creative platform, visual identity and tone into a national expression of what The Perfume Shop now stood for. Elevating it from a familiar retailer into a more distinctive and desirable destination for perfume.
From film and social to stills, OOH, POS and digital, the rollout proved the platform could flex across the full customer journey, from emotional storytelling to retail behaviour. It also created the foundation for further brand development, including brand architecture, social, loyalty programme to employer brand.
