We mobilised the government to help post offices stay open and the UK connected during the energy crisis.

Post Office's Bold Space

Keeping us connected

Background

With energy bills rising, thousands of post offices around the UK were facing closure. The only way to prevent this from happening was if the government continued their energy scheme. We needed the public to help us pressurise decision-makers.

How We Got There

We highlighted the narrative that without government help, the UK public would lose a major facet of how they connect with each other. A three-pronged approach to the campaign demonstrated that the Post Office (as an institution), post offices themselves (individual branches), and the postmasters that run them, are fundamental to the UK’s social and economic fabric.

Grassroots push

We armed postmasters with resources to convince local MPs, which we supplemented with national moments of awareness, highlighting the critical role of the Post Office and postmasters in Britain today. MPs were sent letters encouraging them to lobby BEIS and HMT.

A branch event was held in Blackpool, attended by the local MP, customers and regional media to cover the significance of local branches and the need for ongoing support.

National awareness

The Post Office CEO provided commentary ahead of the Autumn Statement and we launched major new economic research through the media to emphasise the critical role of postmasters. We organised a radio day to raise awareness and created multi-channel content to showcase the contributions of postmasters to their communities.

Amplifying the narrative

We supported the wider Post Office teams with assets to help deliver the narrative across Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Media coverage of the campaign was also amplified on social by the outlets themselves.

Working One-To-One

We provided weekly email updates to postmasters, keeping them informed about the campaign’s progress, including key media hits and reminders to write to MPs. We also communicated with individual postmasters in and around specific media opportunities, including introductory calls, briefings ahead of interviews, and sharing coverage once it was secured.

Boldspace’s ability to bring a commercial objective to life through impactful content and eye-catching creative work is impressive. This integrated PR campaign ensured Post Office and Postmasters gained the support needed to ensure that they were not overlooked when the government extended its energy bill support.
